Virtual Academy Information (Updated Frequently)

Virtual Academy Information

If your student is registered for the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) for the 2020-2021 school year, our district wanted to take some time to send some updates, and answer some of your questions.

  • The VLA will start the same day as in person students, August 24th
  • All of you will receive a student schedule prior to the start of school, most likely by email.
  • Please make sure your parent email is updated in Infinite Campus.  If it is not, please call 270-686-1000 or email to make changes.
  • OPS is providing a Chromebook for all students grades 3-12.  If you have your device from last year, you are good to go.  If you need to pick up a device, it will be from your student’s home school.
    • We are not able to provide a chromebook to any K-2 Virtual Learning Academy students at this time.
    • The requirements for participation in the Virtual Learning Academy in grades K-2 continue to be that you have your own device, and internet access.
  • The district does have plans to provide a chromebook to your student.  Unfortunately, they are backordered.  We hope to be able to provide them some time in November.  We will keep everyone updated regarding the status of those devices as I get more information.

  • Please disregard the chromebook pickup schedule from previous communication.
  • Follow your student’s home school instructions for picking up chromebooks, paying fees, etc.
  • Please contact your student’s home school for more information.
  • Teachers have been selected, and will begin working this week on daily schedules and curriculum for each grade.
  • The expectation is that your student is available and participating in class daily.  Our daily schedule will be very similar to regular school hours.
  • Please be on the lookout for information about the VLA on the OPS home page, Facebook, and TIE text in the coming days.

Virtual Learning Academy Update 8-19-20

I wanted to update everyone as Monday is fast approaching.  Please continue to check the link on the OPS homepage, IC messenger, and TIE text for the latest news.  I have broken this message up by grade level.

Please continue to work through your student’s home elementary school for information.  I know that many of you have already received chromebooks, participated in registrations and meet and greet events.  Please continue to contact the school for information.  Most of you have made contact with your student’s teacher.  If you have not, I am sure that you will be contacted very soon for information regarding the first day of school, and how to participate virtually

One note about Chromebooks for those that still have questions:

OPS is only providing Chromebooks for VLA students in grades 3-12.  K-2 must provide their own device.  All families are required to provide their own internet access.

I am very sensitive to everyone’s needs.  Please know our district simply does not have devices for everyone at this time.

Middle School

All schedules have been delivered to OMS and iMiddle.  I know that many of you have already picked them up.  Please contact OMS or iMiddle if you still need your schedule.

We will be operating on a 5 period day from 8am-2:45pm.

Please have your students continue to check their OPS student email for information about joining their virtual classes on the 24th.

High School

We are working very hard to complete high school schedules and make them viewable in Infinite Campus.  9th graders should be viewable by the end of the day today, 10th graders tomorrow, 11th and 12th should be done by Friday evening.

Please do not panic if your student cannot view their schedule by Friday!  I fully anticipate some of them being finalized even into the weekend.

Please tell your student to continue to check their OPS email for information regarding class on Monday.  Once again, they might not receive that email until sometime over the weekend.

We will be operating on a 4 block schedule identical to OHS.  Students will be expected to participate beginning at 8:30 daily.

Please contact me at with any other questions.

Virtual Learning Academy Update 8-20-20

I wanted to share some more specific schedule information after some questions yesterday.

  • Please continue to check your student email for information regarding first day of school procedures.
  • Please remember, we have made clear from the start that VLA course offerings will be much more limited than what is offered at other district middle and high schools.  While we will make sure all students have required courses, we do not have the staff or capability to offer courses other than what your child has on their schedule.
  • We will do our best to complete any necessary schedule changes by the end of the first week of school.  I am asking for your patience on this.

Virtual Academy Update 8-21-2020

Virtual Academy Students and Parents:

We are all excited about Monday.  I know you are too.  I wanted to provide a couple updates before we head into the weekend.

Elementary Students: Please work with your teacher and home elementary school for information about getting started Monday if you have not done so.  Everyone has a teacher with a Google Classroom that is expecting to see your face Monday morning.

Middle and High School Students All schedules are viewable in Infinite Campus!  Please check that and be ready to join your first teacher’s classroom Monday morning.  Please keep checking your student email for class information.

We are aware that there will be schedules that need to be changed.  We will be using a Google Form for you to request those changes.  Please do not submit schedule requests via email as we will be working from the Google Form.  I have included a link.  Please attend the class on your schedule as we work through those.

Virtual Academy Update 8/22/2020

We have had several questions regarding Honors and AP courses not being on schedules.  We are definitely offering these courses and your schedules will be adjusted some time during the first week of school to reflect that.  Please be patient as we work through the process of getting those correct.  In the meantime, please have your student follow their existing schedule. At this time the only AP courses we will not be able offer are AP European History and AP Chemistry.
