DeLacey Named Director of Transportation, Health and Safety

OPS Superintendent, Dr. Matthew Constant has named Owensboro High School principal John DeLacey as the district’s new Director of Transportation, Health and Safety. DeLacey will officially move into the new role effective July 1, 2021 where he will take over for current Transportation Director Dr. Chris Gaddis who is retiring after more than 30 years with the district.

“This will be an exciting, new challenge for me,” said DeLacey. “Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with each school in our district individually in some capacity, but I’m looking forward to being able to contribute to the entire district as a whole in this new position.”

DeLacey has been with Owensboro Public Schools for 18 years. During that time he has served as a classroom teacher at Cravens elementary, an assistant principal and athletic director at the former 5-6 Center, and the past six years as principal at Owensboro High School. He is also a product of the Owensboro Public Schools district, having attended his entire K-12 school career in the district. After the past six years leading Owensboro High School, DeLacey  is excited for a new challenge in a district leadership role.

“The past six years at OHS have been some of the most rewarding of my life,” said DeLacey. “I’ve been fortunate to work alongside an incredible staff at OHS and I know they will continue making a difference in the lives of so many students that walk our halls. I cherish the relationships I have built with students and staff throughout the years and I look forward to the opportunity to create even more relationships throughout the district in this new role where I will have a direct connection with our entire student population.”

In his new role, DeLacey will be responsible for the direct supervision of the Transportation Department, the District Nurse/Health Staff, the Mental Health Coordinator and supporting contracted services along with maintaining overall operational safety and compliance with state regulations.

“We interviewed several highly-qualified applicants for this position,” said Dr. Constant. “Mr. DeLacey’s passion for our district and his ability to develop relationships make him a great fit for a district-wide position that interacts with each and every student and staff member. I’m excited to watch him pursue this next step in his career as he continues to make a difference in our community because of his passion for our district.”
